Shrubs to small trees, 1-8 meters tall, densely stellate-pubescent, often ferrugineous. Leaf margins mostly entire (or occasionally with vestigial dentation). Flowers solitary or paired in the leaf axils or aggregated into axillary or terminal 2(5-14)-flowered cymes confined to the uppermost nodes of the flowering branches. Pedicels may appear free to the base or they may be united to varying degrees at the base to form a common peduncle. Epicalyx absent. Calyx lobes usually with prominent costae, sometimes twisted in bud. Corolla large and showy, white, yellow or yellow-orange, petals often with a dark reddish spot at base. Staminal column included or exerted, filamentiferous at apex. Styles 7-27. Fruits schizocarpic, more or less blackish. Mericarps 7-27, often with a dorsal wing (the wing suppressed in some species). Seeds 2-7, reniform. Endoglossum absent.
