Robust annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs, often tomentose or hispid. Leaves 8-12 cm, long petiolate. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils. Epicalyx present of 4-16 bracts. Calyx spathaceous, without costae, apically five-toothed, splits along a single suture at flowering and after flowering dehisces around the circumference, falling away as a whole with the petals and staminal column to which it is adnate basally. Corolla large, yellow with a dark red center. Staminal column apically 5-toothed. Fruit a capsule, elongate, pubescent or hispid, 5-carpelled, dehiscent with numerous seeds. Seeds reniform. Endoglossum absent.
