Subshrubs to small trees, glabrescent or with stellate pubescence. Leaves elliptic, ovate or cordate, margin cernate or serrate, rarely subentire. Inflorescences axillary or terminal, flowers solitary, or inflorescences racemose, paniculate, rarely umbellate. Epicalyx absent. Corolla often yellow or less often orange. Androecium usually included, staminal column filamentiferous at apex. Styles 5-many, stigmas capitate. Fruits schizocarpic (sometimes pseudocapsular); mericarps 5-many, 2 x length of column, single-celled, apically acute to spinescent (rarely rounded), 3-6 seeded. Endoglossum absent or very rarely dividing the mericarp in two.
