Coarse herbs, shrubs or trees up to 20 m. with distinctive stellate hairs (except where glabrate), bristles, large and small prickles with swollen bases, and spines (themselves often stellate –pubescent). Leaves very large, orbicular, long-petiolate, stipules very large, prominent. Inflorescence axillary, pedicels erect and articulate at base,flowers large and sometimes solitary. Epicalyx of 3-10 bracts, up to 5 cm long, partially connate at base, sometimes deciduous. Calyx connate at base, apically 5 lobed, stellate pubescent or prickly. Corolla greenish yellow, bright yellow, orange or rose, up to 15 cm long, stellate pubescent. Staminal column included or equal to corolla lobes, antheriferous throughout or distally. Fruits capsular, 5-locular, sometimes winged, densely hispid, stellate pubescent or glabrous, often beaked, dehiscent. Seeds about 20 per locule, variously pubescent or glabrous. Endoglossum probably absent.
