Trees. Leaves broadly ovate or elliptic, margin entire or denticulate, leathery and often with foliar nectaries abaxially on principal veins, stipules large, oblong, enclosing terminal bud, caducous, leaving a distinctive scar (form, size, placement and type of scar is species specific). Flowers solitary in upper leaf axils, or sometimes aggregated terminally or on short side branches. Epicalyx of 5-10 bracts or 8-12+. Calyx lobes often costate with nectaries on midribs. Corolla usually large and showy, yellow, white, rose-pink, red, or purple (with or with out a darker centre). Staminal column included, antheriferous distally or throughout length, apically 5 toothed. Fruits capsular, with 5 carpels with endocarps in 2 separate halves (sometimes giving the impression of 10 carpels). Seeds 2 to many per carpel. Endoglossum present.
