Perennial herbs or subshrubs without distichous branching. Leaves ovate, elliptic, rhombic or linear, occasionally lobed. Inflorescence axillary and flowers solitary or in glomerules, or terminal. Epicalyx absent. Calyx often with 10 costae, these often only basally distinct. Corolla white, yellow, orange, rose or purplish, sometimes with a dark red centre. Staminal column included, filamentiferous at apex. Styles 5—14. Fruits schizocarpic, indehiscent or apically dehiscent. Mericarps 5—14, usually with 2 apical spines, 1-celled, 1-seeded. Endoglossum absent.
