Trees or shrubs (one of few truely arboreal genera of Malvaceae, many species produce trees 10-15m tall and some individuals of R.mirandae attain heights of 20-35 m). Pubescence stellate or lepidote or with long simple hairs. Pedicels articulated, often paired. Flowers fragrant, in open axillary panicles or condensed axillary racemes. Epicalyx absent. Calyx deeply five-lobed, costae absent. Corolla lavender, white or yellowish, sometimes with purple veins or a dark spot on the claw. Staminal column antheriferous at apex. Fruits schizocarpic. Styles and mericarps 7-30, mericarps elongated and inflated, indehiscent, thin-walled, unornamented, seeds solitary, globose reniform, pubescent. Endoglossum absent.
