Shrubs or subshrubs. Leaves short petiolate, blades ovate to suborbicular or elliptic. Inflorescence solitary or grouped in head-like aggregations. Epicalyx present, of 8-13 bracts, mostly peltate sometimes spoon-shaped, longer than calyx. Calyx without costae. Corolla showy, yellow or rose lavender. Staminal column included, apically 5-dentate, anthers scattered along the length of the column or grouped in distinct bands. Styles 10, stigmas capitate. Fruits schizocarpic. Mericarps 5, essentially indehiscent, usually smooth without ornamentation (one species has wings), single-seeded.
