Habit: prostrate perennial herbs, erect subshrubs or shrubs, (rarely arborsecent), stellate pubescent, sometimes viscid or glabrate. Leaves petiolate, blades ovate, elliptic, lanceolate, oblanceolate, deltoid, sometimes lobed, sometimes asymmetrical, dentate or crenate (Rarely entire). Inflorescences solitary or paired in leaf axils, or aggregated in racemes, panicles, or heads. Epicalyx of 4-22 lobes, free or basally connate. Calyx 5 lobed, ecostate. Corolla white, yellow, lavender, or purple, sometimes with a dark basal spot. Staminal column included or exerted, apex with 5 apical teeth. Ovary of 5 carpels, styles 10, with capitate stigmas. Fruits schizocarpic, mericarps 5, usually indehiscent, sometimes dehiscent, sometimes winged, spined, rugose, or otherwise ornamented. Seeds solitary.Endoglossum absent.
