Flowers solitary in the leaf axils or aggregated terminally into leafy racemes. Epicalyx absent. Calyx cupulate with triangular lobes, costae absent or one. Corolla either +/- equal to the calyx and inconspicuous, especially in annual species or large and showy, white, pink or rose-lavender, often drying purplish. Staminal column antheriferous at apex. Styles and mericarps 30-40. Styles clavate. Fruits schizocarpic, subglobose, included in calyx. Mericarps irregularly arranged, each trigonal to reniform, more or less rugose, single-seeded, seeds glabrous. Endoglossum unknown.
