Perennial acaulescent herbs, underground stems usually branched. Stipules adnate to the petiole forming a sheath. Pedicel adnate to the petiole (inserted on the sheath). Flowers, solitary, sometimes subsessile. Epicalyx absent. Calyx gamosepalous, ca. half divided. Staminal column included, apex anthiferous. Styles 7-14, stigmas capitate. Fruits schizocarpic. Mericarps 7-14, dehiscent, usually acute or acuminate apically, single-celled, single-seeded. Endoglossum absent.
