Shrub 2-3 m tall, stems stellate pubescent. Leaves petiolate, 3-5-lobed. Flowers solitary in leaf axils. Epicalyx absent. Calyx without costae. Corolla purple. Staminal column +++. Fruits schizocarpic. Mericarps 8-12, thin-walled, rounded, inflated, pubescent, with divergent 2 spines, each 6-14 mm long, at the base of each mericarp (these spines cause the calyx to become reflexed), 3-seeded, seeds 3mm long, warty. Endoglossum absent.
Abutilon (Malvaceae): Mericarps not inflated, without basal spines, seeds glabrous or slightly pubescent.
Sida (Malvaceae): Calyx often with 10 costae at the base. Mericarps not inflated, hardened, laterally reticulate, with 2 spines apically on each mericarp.
