Perennial herbs, prostrate or creeping, often with a tuberous rootstock. Leaves palmately lobed. Flower solitary, axillary on long, slender pedicels sometimes exceeding the subtending leaf. Epicalyx present, foliose, 3 lobed (absent in M. sandemannii). Calyx 5 lobed, deeply divided+++. Corolla rose pink, but can be yellowish tinted. Staminal column included, filamentiferous at apex.+++. Ovary with 1 ovule per carpel. Fruits schizocarpic. Mericarps 8-15, with 2-celled, one sterile and the other 1-seeded, with rugose or reticulate walls, seeds kidney-shaped. Endoglossum usually present, absent in M. palustre and M. australe.
