Erect shrubs, clambering vines or small trees. Leaves petiolate, blades elliptic, ovate or 3-5 lobed, truncate or cordate. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils, or sometimes grouped in apical cymes. Epicalyx of (5) 8-9 linear, lanceolate, or spathulate lobes. Calyx without costae, campanulate or tubular, 5 lobed. Corolla red, (rarely white), auriculate (mitten shaped) at base, tubular. Androecium usually exerted. Staminal column with 5 apical teeth, filaments short and retrose. Styles 10, stigmas capitate. Fruit a fleshy schizocarp or berry, oblate, red (rarely white), with 5 carpels. Endoglossum absent.
