Annual herbs to perennial shrubs, herbaceous to soft woody, sometimes small trees, 1-3m tall; glabrate to or with stellate pubescence. Leaves petiolate, deeply cordate, palmately 5-7-lobed, the lobes acute or obtuse, serrate or crenate margins. Flowers solitary or paired in leaf axils. Epicalyx of 3 ligulate or triangular lobes. Calyx 5 lobed, without costae, tubular in flower, more or less enclosing the fruit. Corolla purple, lavender or whitish with purple veins. Staminal column included, filamentiferous at apex. Styles 6-10, stigmatic zones introrsely decurrent. Fruits schizocarpic. Mericarps semicircular wedges, smooth, glabrous or more or less pubescent, essentially indehiscent; seeds solitary. Endoglossum absent.
