Erect subshrubs 1-2m tall. Pubescence of simple hairs 1-2mm long. Leaves long-petiolate, becoming amplexicaul towards inflorescence in H. amplexifolia. Blades ovate, deeply cordate, serrate, acuminate, hirsute on both surfaces, discolorous. Flowers solitary in leaf axils, or in terminal racemes or lax panicles. Epicalyx absent. Calyx hirsute (stellate hairs in H. hasslerana), divided almost to base, becoming larger in fruit, without costae. Corolla yellow, equal to calyx or up to 3 times as long. Androecium filamentous at apex. Styles 10-20, stigmas capitate. Fruits schizocarpic. Mericarps 10-20, 5-seeded, pubescent, black at maturity, apically acute or aristate, dehiscent, with two small knobs at base. Endoglossum present below lowermost seed. Seeds glabrous,or with scattered short hairs.
