Annual or perennial herbs, erect or ascending. Leaves ovate or orbicular, usually palmately lobed or simple. Pedicels without articulation. Flowers usually in axillary scorpioid cymes, sometimes solitary. Epicalyx present of 2-3 filiform bracts. Calyx costae absent. Corolla purple or pink (sometimes white), petal 4-5, shorter than to slightly longer than the calyx. Staminal column antheriferous at apex. Fruits schizocarpic. Styles and mericarps 5-16, mericarps oblate, glabrous, indehiscent, horseshoe-shaped, with irregular transverse ridges, these sometimes interlocking in the fruit between adjacent mericarps, single-seeded. Small endoglossum sometimes present.
