Annual, erect, low herbs, usually widely branching. Stems hollow and with stellate pubescence. Petioles 1-2 times the length of the leaf blade. Leaves orbicular. Epicalyx of 3 linear lobes. Flowers solitary or grouped in a fascicles (E. exilis) in the leaf axils. Pedicels either up to 3 cm long and subequal to the subtending leaves or 1.5-6 cm long and exceeding the subtending leaves. Calyx with 5 costae. Corolla white, pinkish or rose-purple, E. rotundifolia has striking red basal spots. Staminal column included, filamentiferous at apex. Styles 12-35. Fruits schizocarpic, a depressed disk, glabrous. Mericarps 12-35, single-seeded, indehiscent, reticulate or ridged laterally and dorsally, brown or blackish. Seeds subglabrous. Endoglossum absent.
